PRLog (Press Release)– Apr 06, 2011– Houston, TX - In this year's State of the Union address, United States President Barack Obama called for the ambitious target of obtaining 80% of U.S. energy from clean energy by 2035.
President Obama's goal is to cut the subsidies for fossil fuels and reinvest them in clean energy instead. In this context, clean energy includes not only traditional renewable energy like wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric and geothermal but also nuclear energy, clean coal and natural gas. Nobody can say yet how Fukushima and the potential government shutdown in the U.S. due to budget cuts will affect the role of nuclear energy and the energy mix goals. However, a further boost in renewable energy and the promotion of energy efficiency in the U.S. is to be expected due to the recent developments in Japan.
Germany, one of the most important trade partners of the U.S., closed two nuclear reactors permanently in the immediate aftermath of the Japanese nuclear accident. Angela Merkel also called on her government to revisit its controversial decision to extend the life of its aging reactors. Germany uses an advanced system of feed-in tariffs to pay for renewable energy generation, and has an aggressive target of meeting 39% of its electricity supply with renewable energy by 2020.
Germany's system of advanced renewable tariffs has enabled the country to exceed its 2010 target of 12.5% by a wide margin, with 17% if energy currently being produced by renewable sources. Germany also recently set a new world record by installing 7,400 MW of solar PV in one year. To showcase the U.S.-market potential in renewable energy and to discuss Germany's and America's energy future, the German American Chambers of Commerce (GACC) and the German Energy Agency (dena) are hosting the 3rd German American Energy Conference 2011 titled "Global Energy Challenges – Transatlantic Business Opportunities" in Berlin on May 12 – 13, 2011.
Continuing the success of previous years, this event will address US-specific conditions and support programs for renewable energy at the federal and state level. The German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Mr. Rainer Brüderle, will open the conference. Murphy, U.S. Ambassador to Germany as well as Mr. Jonathan Feipel, Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, will speak at this year's conference.
