Somerset Chamber rallies businesses for huge investment opportunity

PRLog (Press Release)– May 09, 2011– The site preparation works for Hin car news kley Point C, the proposed nuclear new build, is expected to inject at least £5million in wages alone into the local economy. If approved soon, the site preparation works, which prepare the site for the main construction to follow, would begin later this year. This would unlock investment and kick-start new employment and economic opportunities in the area, bringing enormous benefits to businesses in Somerset at a time when many are struggling with the ongoing effects of the recession.

But the planning application for the site preparation stage is currently being subjected to extensive delays and Somerset Chamber is calling for businesses across the county to contact the West Somerset District Council Planners and West Somerset Councillors to encourage them to give sufficient consideration to the business and employment benefits of the project.

Rupert Cox, Chief Executive of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, comments, "Whilst we understand that there are many environmental issues and other factors that need to be considered, the business and employment benefits are not necessarily being given the weight they warrant at present.  At a time when many businesses are fighting for survival, a planning decision that delays the start of the site preparation work will be particularly costly to both business and employment as we fight our way out of a recession.

"We have until 20 May to communicate our views and so far the voice of business has not been heard clearly enough – so let's get going! The West Somerset District Planning Authority has a responsibility to the whole of S rc helicopter and car market place omerset to fully understand and account for the business case when assessing this application. I urge businesses throughout the county to make sure your voices are heard – and to get involved in this unique opportunity."

Overall, Hinkley Point C is expected to deliver 5,000 Somerset jobs during construction and 900 permanent jobs during operation; £100million per chevrolet year into the local economy during construction and £40million per year during operation; and over £6million into skills and training in Somerset.

The site preparation works stage, which is expected to last around 15 months, would begin to unlock the benefit for business and create full time jobs for around 145 Somerset workers. The businesses involved will invest in skills and apprenticeships, enabling both the businesses and the young people employed to develop greater skills and capability, which in turn will help business win more contracts employing higher skills in the future. Workers need this boost now – not in two or three years' time.
