Globally acclaimed auto manufacturer Volvo Cars recently completed their shoot for O2 Media's hit morning TV show "The Balancing Act."  The segment, which features North American Brand Manager Joe Haslem, will air in May on Lifetime Television.  Haslem introduces viewers to a new Volvo safety feature intended to save lives and also help drivers avoid costly vehicle repairs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 11% of all traffic fatalities are caused by collisions with pedestrians, which amounts to nearly 5000 people each year.  Half of these deaths occur at speeds under 16 miles per hour.   With these alarming statistics in mind, Volvo went to work to create a preventative vehicle system that would change the automobile industry as we know it.  The result is the world's first Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a system that indentifies pedestrians and automatically brakes the vehicle at speeds up to 22 miles per hour.

"Our system is always watching the road in front of the car, even during that split second that the driver might not be," Haslem says.  "The reality is that even very good drivers can easily be distracted.  The Balancing Act is a great opportunity to show viewers just how passionate Volvo is about safety."

This remarkable new technology is also helping Volvo drivers avoid "fender benders" when driving in town at low speeds.  Since the majority of accidents occur at less than 10 miles per hour and in city driving situations, the system has the potential to save drivers huge amounts of money in repairs.  The "City Safety" feature works from 2-19 miles per hour, monitoring the area in front of the vehicle and automatically applying the brake to help avoid a collision.

Features like Pedestrian Detection and City Safety have shown automobile manufacturers and consumers across the globe the extent of Volvo's commitment to safety.  "Volvo continues to push the technical boundaries in our core value of safety," Haslem says.  "In fact, by the year 2020 it is our vision that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo."
